Covering an area of 360 ha, you can see a very big diversity of architectural styles, it's a mix since more than one century. You also are going to see some unmissable places. 1. Vilnius Town Hall is located in the very centre of the city, in the Town Hall Square. The history of it began in the XVth century. It is mentioned for the first time in 1432. When Vilnius city got it's city rights in 1387 it had to build an administrative office. According to some XVIth century sources, at first Vilnius Town Hall was that of gothic style and had a tower. However, it suffered from fires and invaders so was rebuilt several times. In 1799 Laurynas Gucevičius designed it in neoclassical style and it remained unchanged since then. 2. Vilnius Cathedral: a full name of which is Vilnius Cathedral Basilica of St. Stanislav and St. Vladislav, is located below Gediminas Castle in the centre of Vilnius city and it is the most spectaculous masterpeace of classicism style in the capital of Lithuania. Moreover, it is also a historical heritage. 3. Gedimino Tower & The Hill of three Crosses: Whatever where you are in the city you can't miss them, they're one of the most stunning view of the old city center. Gedimino tower it's the only survival part of the Gedimino Castle. From this tower you can admire the panoramic view. Nowadays, there is a museum inside the tower. It's a symbol reminding the torture of seven Franciscan monks. 3. Church of St. Johns / Vilnius University, founded in 1579 is composed of 13 courtyards with 13 buildings, each consisting of several blocks, as well as the Church of St. Johns. In 1985 Vilnius University was awarded European Gold Medal for the protection of monuments. You can see the architectural styles : Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Classicism. This University is one of the oldest and most famous establishments of higher education in Eastern and Central Europe. // 4. St John's Church: Integrated into composition of Vilnius University, it's one of the most impressive baroque churches in Vilnius. It serves as a pray house, a Museum of Science and a place for solemnities and concerts. It is possible to visit the main hall of the church, but also get down to it`s basement, as well as climb into its` loft. 5. St Anne's Church: It will definitely leave an impression for anyone. It is said that Napoleon Bonaparte, while visiting Vilnius during the Franco-Russian War in 1812, was so impressed by this church that he loudly expressed his emotions by saying that if he could, he would take St. Anne's Church with him to Paris in his own palm. At first, this church was built with wood in 1394, later, wood was replaced by bricks. Having survived to the present day without changing for over 500 years, St Anne's Church is now a symbol of Vilnius. 6. Užupis district. The artistic and wacky district of Vilnius city. You can't miss the mermaid who is going to welcome you when you cross the bridge. After trying to count the locks covering this one, you are going to meet the Official symbol of the Independence of Uzipisians: The Angel (is held here since 1992). Walk around and have a stop front of the Uzupis Constitution (Paupio street). 7. The Television Tower: After this long walking day, you can enjoy having a dinner to the 55th floor of the Television Tower. There is the "Milky Way" restaurant which turns slowly to permit you to enjoy the panoramic view during the sunset for example. This tower is also use to do some [.....] 21litas the entrance free. You can go there in taxi or in bus [10, Sausio 13-osios, Vilnius]. It's open daily from 10 a.m until 10 p.m 8. Europos Parkas: The European park 30 km outside of Vilnius. It's a huge open-air contemporary museum, covering 55 hectares of forests. You can see there more than 100 works of art carried by international artists. The most popular is the monument representing the center of Europe, built by Mr. Gintaras Karosas. 25 Ltl the entrance fee. 9. Pūčkoriai Path & Belmontas: You will meet is a beautifully big, 65 metres high and 260 metres wide steep hill, covered with forests and Vilnia river in the bottom. Beautiful path for tourists, wishing to discover still green hills around Vilnius, which Vilnius city is famous of.. Travel video about destination Lithuania in Europe. Lithuania is situated on the Baltic Sea and has a long history, fortified castles and splendid palaces, a country that has many religious buildings and where religious faith has become an art form. Vilnius, the capital, is a city of Baroque mixed with Gothic, Renaissance and Classicism, a melting pot of culture. Its main landmark is Castle Hill with its red-coloured Gediminas Tower that marks the beginning of the city's history. The Boulevard begins in Cathedral Square where, adjoining the cathedral, is a fine white bell tower. The Cathedral’s interior still radiates a Gothic sense of space. The local people are particularly proud of the cathedral’s copy of the Turin Shroud. In the Middle Ages when the Grand Dukes ruled, the ancient capital of Trakei was the political centre of Lithuania’s power. The later built Water Castle is the real landmark of Lithuanian history. Grand Duke Vytautas had the castle extended and from it ruled a vast empire which, for a short time, stretched from the Baltic to the Black Sea. Around forty kilometres northwest of Vilnius lies the archaeological site of Kernave, Lithuania’s ‘Troy’. The exhibits date from the tenth century B.C. until the Early Middle Ages. During the first centuries A.C., large settlements were established in the Pajauta Valley, which were protected by the Castle Mountains. On the edge of the Zemait Highland in the north lies Şiauliai, Lithuania’s fourth largest city, much of which had to be rebuilt after the Second World War and that since the sixteenth century had been an important market and trading city. Sundial Square is the city’s main landmark with its impressive sundial that was created for the city’s seven hundred and fiftieth jubilee in 1986. Full of European history, Lithuania has become a modern day country with magnificent castles, ancient towns, nature and culture and is a destination that is bound to please! -------------- Watch more travel videos ► https://goo.gl/MXPgSs Join us. Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania, and its largest city, with a population of 554,060 (838,852 together with Vilnius County) as of 2011. It is located in the southeast of the country. It is the second biggest city of the Baltic states, after Riga. Vilnius is the seat of the Vilnius city municipality and of the Vilnius district municipality. It is also the capital of Vilnius County. The first known written record of Vilnius as the Lithuanian capital is known from Gediminas' letters in 1323. Vilnius is classified as a Gamma global city according to GaWC studies, and is known for its Old Town of beautiful architecture, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. Its Jewish influence until the 20th century has led to it being described as the "Jerusalem of Lita" and Napoleon named it "the Jerusalem of the North" as he was passing through in 1812. In the year 2009, Vilnius was the European Capital of Culture, together with the Austrian city of Linz. Vilnius has been rapidly transformed, and the town has emerged as a modern European city. Many of its older buildings have been renovated, and a business and commercial area is being developed into the New City Centre, expected to become the city's main administrative and business district on the north side of the Neris river. This area includes modern residential and retail space, with the municipality building and the 129-metre (423') Europa Tower as its most prominent buildings. The construction of Swedbank's headquarters is symbolic of the importance of Scandinavian banks in Vilnius. The building complex "Vilnius Business Harbour" was built in 2008, and one of its towers is now the 5th tallest building in Lithuania. More buildings are scheduled for construction in the area. Vilnius was selected as a 2009 European Capital of Culture, along with Linz, the capital of Upper Austria. Incredible city- surprised and amazed by the grand history of this country, the baroque architecture, its romanticism, its quaint narrow cobblestone streets, the greenery and the wonderful friends I met! :) would definitely return. Also went to the historic town of Trakai- of lakes and islands and beautiful castles.

It lies in the valley of the confluence of Neris and Vilnia rivers and has 527,930 inhabitants (2013 statistics). Upper Castle (Gediminas Castle), Arsenalo St 5 (Climb up to it from the Cathedral Square or take the funicular on the other side of the hill, facing the river). Erected on a top of a large hill-fort in the 9th–14th centuries by Dukes of Lithuania. Approximately in the very end of 13th century the Seat due to strategic reasons was transferred from Trakai to Vilnius and the castle was substantially reconstructed. The first castles were wooden, and only in the beginning of 15th century everything was rebuilt in brick and stone. The preserved ruins of Gothic Ducal Palace and surrounding fortifications remain to date. The top of the largest and the only survived tower of the defensive wall offer the best view of Vilnius. Tower of Gediminas Castle (Gedimino pilies bokštas). The red-brick tower, a part of the Upper Castle fortifications. Houses an exposition of archaeological findings and other exhibits. National flag was first raised on its top in 1919 when the country regained independence from Russia. Since then the tower is an important state and historic symbol of Vilnius and of Lithuania itself. Vilnius Cathedral ((Vilniaus arkikatedra bazilika)), Katedra Sq 2. An original wooden cathedral was built here in 1251 on a site of the pagan temple. Later, in 1387, a Gothic style cathedral was built. Now it is a Classical style cathedral built in 1783-1801 to the project of architect Laurynas Gucevičius. There were 27 crypts of different depth and size under the Cathedral floor. Often overflowed during the spring floods, many times devastated by soldiers looking for treasures during the wars and upheavals, 1968-1989 the crypts were put in order, permanent exposition was arranged. Visiting crypts is permitted only accompanied by a guide. Cathedral Square & the Bell Tower, Katedra Sq 1. The tower base is round, while the Baroque belfry features octagonal plan. Approximately between the Bell Tower and Cathedral, in the square, look for a particular tile with a word "Stebuklas" (Lithuanian for "miracle") written on it. Stand on it, make a wish and turn around three times. Town Hall (Vilniaus rotušė), Didžioji St 31 (Central part of Old Town). Central building of the Old Town. The first Gothic style Town Hall was built in 1432 in the very same place as it is today. It was reconstructed several times until the city clock tower collapsed and damaged the significant part of the main building. The new Classical style building to the design of architect Laurynas Gucevičius was completed in 1799 and so remains till date. Since 2001 it operates as a public institution, organizes representative and protocol events, various ceremonies, celebrations of public holidays, overall about 300 cultural and educational events are held every year. Užupis District. Part of Old Town, a largely unrestored area primarily occupied by artists, dreamers, squatters, and drunks. In 1998, the residents unofficially declared the area to be an independent republic, with its own president, anthem, flag, and constitution. Great to visit on April Fools day, when mock border guards stamp passports and the entire area erupts into a party. St. Anne's Church (Šv. Onos bažnyčia), Maironio St 8, LT-01124 Vilnius (Old Town near Užupis). One of the most beautiful churches in Vilnius and in Lithuania. Very small in size, but a very beautiful example of gothic architecture. There is a legend that when during his conquests Napoleon came to Vilnius and saw this church he said he would like to take it on his palm and bring to France. Church of St. Francis and St. Bernard (Šv. Pranciškaus Asyžiečio bažnyčia), Maironio St 10 (Old Town near Užupis, just behind the St. Anne's Church). Construction completed in 1564. Together with St. Ann's Church compiles a one of the most important ensembles of Gothic architecture in the country. Bernardine Garden (Bernardinų sodas), Maironis St (Old Town between Gediminas' Castle and the Church of Saint Francis and Saint Bernard), Former Sereikiškės Park, it has been substantially reconstructed in 2013.

It is the most beautiful Christmas tree in Europe. The Vilnius Christmas tree is stunning! Get to the bustling streets, watch the Christmas tree and be amazed by the decorations in the Old Town. Covered with 70,000 light bulbs and 900 Christmas toys, the awe-inspiring construction is so bright it can easily be seen from an airplane on its descent to Vilnius Airport. Traditionally, Vilnius’ Christmas tree is made up of a metal frame covered in decorations and spruce branches - leftovers from forestry work. With a total surface area of 2,500 square metres, it’s sure to provide multiple great backdrops for that perfect holiday photo. The Christmas tree is just one of many holiday attractions on offer in Vilnius this December. Surrounding it is a traditional Christmas Market, where, alongside the typical holiday staples and handmade gifts

From Riga, we catch a bus to the Lithuanian capital. We marvel at the Christmas market in Cathedral Square, visit the self-declared Uzupis Republic (stopping by the mermaid, of course) and traipse up to the castle. Vilnius is fantastic - especially in the snow.
